During death anniversary of Mahsa Amini Member of Iran’s Basij Paramilitary Force Fatally Shot

Member of Iran’s Basij Paramilitary Force Shot Dead

According to state media reports on Sunday, a member of Iran's Basij paramilitary force, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, lost their life during events marking the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's demise.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, tragically passed away in police custody on September 16, 2022. Her arrest was related to an alleged violation of Iran's stringent dress code for women.

Amini's death led to months of protests, resulting in numerous casualties, including security personnel. Tehran described these demonstrations as "riots" incited by foreign governments and "hostile media."

State news agency IRNA reported that "one individual was martyred, and three others sustained injuries" during a "random shooting" by two unidentified assailants targeting Basij guards in Nurabad, a city in Southern Fars province, on Saturday evening.

The news agency did not immediately provide details about the identity of the assailants or the motive behind the attack.

It was reported that "the province's intelligence, security, and law enforcement agencies are making efforts to apprehend the perpetrators" who fled the scene after the shooting.

In a separate development, the Revolutionary Guards announced the arrest of a dual national on charges of "plotting to incite riots and engage in vandalism" in Karaj, a city west of Tehran. However, no further information about the suspect's identity or nationality was disclosed.

On Saturday, authorities took into custody several groups accused of "conspiring to create disorder" and producing content intended to support "hostile media," as reported by IRNA.

Many of these arrests were conducted in Kurdistan, the home province of Mahsa Amini, as well as in Iran's northwest and south, according to the news agency. Additional arrests were made in North Khorasan province in northeastern Iran, where individuals were allegedly inciting "riots," as reported by the Mehr news agency.

In response to the anniversary of the protests, authorities in Isfahan identified "97 individuals" and blocked 15 Instagram pages for attempting to influence "public opinion," as announced by IRNA.
