New Chief Justice Sworn in Amid Economic Crisis in Pakistan

Against the backdrop of a spiraling economic crisis, Pakistan has welcomed its new Chief Justice. Justice Qazi Faris Isa has been sworn in as the 29th Chief Justice of the country.
Justice Isa took the oath of office during a ceremony in Islamabad, administered by President Arif Alvi. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Anwar and Chief of Army Staff Aseem Munir.
In a notable departure from previous protocol, Justice Isa's wife, Serena, stood by his side as he took the oath. Typically, close family members, including spouses, are seated in the front row during official ceremonies.
In 2019, Justice Isa and his wife faced scrutiny over tax irregularities. Accusations suggested that properties in London were owned by Justice Isa's spouse. However, the legal community accused then-Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party of targeting the judge, alleging it was in response to Justice Isa's rulings against Khan's establishment in several cases.
The new Chief Justice faces a daunting array of challenges. Chief among them is the impending elections in Pakistan and the legal and provincial controversies surrounding them.
