South Korean Teachers Protest Worsening Work Conditions

Approximately 50,000 South Korean teachers gathered in Seoul to stage a massive protest against the deteriorating work conditions they face in South Korea. The protests come in the wake of weeks of mourning following the tragic suicide of an elementary school teacher in July.

The deceased teacher's death had a profound impact on the teaching community, leading scores of teachers to vow taking a leave of absence to participate in the protest. Furthermore, an additional 60,000 to 70,000 teachers held rallies in various other locations across the country in solidarity.

These mourners, consisting of parents and students, expressed their grief by laying down flowers and paying their respects at the memorial altar located at the elementary school where the teacher was found dead. The deceased teacher had repeatedly raised concerns about rising anxiety due to exploitative complaints from parents, disputes among children, and mistreatment complaints.

The mistreatment complaints encompassed allegations of child abuse and disciplinary actions towards pupils. In response to these critical issues, the protesters are demanding better protection of their rights while shedding light on the widespread harassment teachers face from parents, which has tragically resulted in some of their colleagues resorting to suicide.

Disturbingly, South Korean government data reveals that within a span of six years until June this year, approximately 100 public school teachers have died by suicide. President Yun Suk Yul has expressed deep concern over this crisis and has ordered officials to take immediate action to safeguard teachers' rights. The South Korean Ministry of Education is also gearing up to implement measures aimed at protecting educators from exploitation.

As the protests continue, South Korean teachers are determined to bring about change, seeking an improved work environment and enhanced rights protection, ultimately striving to create a safer and more supportive teaching community.
