Crocodiles on the Loose as Flash Floods Hit Southern China
Published on TimeCanvas360
Crocodiles have made headlines as torrential rain battered Southern China. Deluges surrounded the city of Melming, causing a lake at the commercial crocodile farm to overflow. A total of 71 crocodiles were on the loose, out of which 66 have been caught by local authorities. However, the hunt for the missing five is still ongoing.
Chinese authorities launched a search operation for the runaway crocodiles, and 40 of them were found inside the farm, while 26 were captured near the convergence point between the lake and other flooded areas. Chinese state media showed emergency responders in raid uniforms searching flooded fields in rescue boats.
Local authorities have dispatched more people to continue searching areas within a five-kilometer radius around the farm. While the search for the crocodiles on the prowl is still ongoing, residents have been cautioned to stay indoors.
The area currently ravaged by flash floods is China's largest crocodile breeding center. Crocodiles are bred in China for their skin as well as their meat, which is sometimes used in traditional medicine.
