Elon Musk Considers Monthly Fee for Online Platform X formerly known as Twitter
Online platform X could introduce a monthly fee for all users, as its owner, Elon Musk, seeks solutions to address the issue of bots plaguing the platform. Musk has been actively making changes to the platform since acquiring it for $44 billion in October last year, when it was known as Twitter.
Recent Changes to Platform X
Since taking over the platform, Musk has implemented several significant changes, including:
- Firing thousands of employees.
- Introducing a paid premium option for users.
- Reducing content moderation efforts.
- Reinstating formerly banned accounts, including that of former US president Donald Trump.
In July, Musk revealed that the platform had experienced a significant decline in advertising revenue, raising concerns about its financial sustainability. One of the primary challenges faced by the platform is the presence of bots—accounts operated by computer programs rather than humans. These bots are often used to artificially amplify political messages or spread racial hatred.
Addressing Online Anti-Semitism
During a discussion with Elon Musk on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised concerns about online anti-Semitism and inquired about measures to prevent the use of bot armies for replicating and amplifying hate speech.
Musk responded by stating that the company is considering implementing a small monthly payment requirement for the use of the X system as a way to combat the proliferation of bots. He explained, "It's the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots. Because a bot costs a fraction of a penny—call it a tenth of a penny—but if somebody even has to pay a few dollars, some minor amount, the effective cost of bots is very high. And then you also have to get a new payment method every time you have a new bot."
Ongoing Challenges
The conversation between Musk and Netanyahu, which was broadcast on X, comes at a time when Elon Musk is engaged in a dispute with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a US-based Jewish organization. Musk has accused the ADL of making baseless allegations of anti-Semitism, resulting in the loss of advertisers and reduced revenue for his company. He has even threatened to pursue legal action seeking billions of dollars in damages.
Elon Musk's consideration of implementing a monthly fee for platform X reflects the evolving challenges faced by online platforms in combating bot-related issues and maintaining a safe and sustainable environment for users. As the situation continues to develop, it remains to be seen how this potential change will impact the platform's user base and its ability to address the issue of bots effectively.
